The stress proved to be beneficial

The Stress Response is a physiological event giving rise to physiological and psychological outcomes. Stress has evolved as a way of coping with events that might compromise our well-being. Without stress we would probably die. With stress we would probably die. Stress is our best friend and worst enemy, why? Read on....

The Oxford English Dictionary defines Stress as "a state of mental, emotional, or other strain".

The Health and Safety Executive (UK) looks at the definition from a work perspective: "The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them at work."

Work related stress is the process that arises where work demands of different types and combinations exceed the person's capacity and capability to cope.

Stress is not an illness - it is a state. However, if stress becomes too excessive and prolonged, mental and physical illness may develop.

How does this happen, what causes stress and what are the results?

The Stress Response or Fight, Flight and Fright Response has evolved with us as an inbuilt system to cope with crises. These crises may be minor or major and everyday events. Regardless of the severity of the crisis, the body takes the same actions.

The stress response is initiated by our senses, which our brain sees as a threat on homeostasis and instructs the body to take appropriate action. Homeostasis is the body functioning at its normal rates, for example, normal blood pressure, breathing rate, pulse rate, perspiration output, heart output, etc. The brain ensures we maintain those "normal rates" throughout each and every day. If, however, we encounter a "stressor", which can be minor or major, the brain initiates the Stress Response.

The stress response initially involves the release of Adrenalin and Noradrenalin into the bloodstream. The hormones are synthesised and released from the Adrenal Glands, located just on top of the kidneys.

The hormones have the following effects, they:

increase heart rate, increase blood pressure, increase breathing rate, increase blood glucose levels, increase metabolic rate, decrease digestive activity, decrease excretory activity, decrease reproductive activity.

What is behind this response?

The results of the hormones' activities ensure that all available energy is shunted away from many of the major organs and transferred to the muscles, along with additional oxygen in readiness for "Fight or Flight".

It is a self-survival system that has evolved with us over tens of thousands of years. During the Stone Age a human encounters a lion or tiger or bear (oh my!!) (Wizard of Oz). The stress response immediately kicks in. Oxygen and glucose rush to the arm and leg muscles ready for the human to either fight or run away. This has stayed with us ever since.

There are two types of stress, short term, which is described above and long term stress.

During long term stress, apart from adrenalin and noradrenalin, cortisol and aldosterone are released into the bloodstream. These hormones are also produced in the adrenal glands and have a similar effect to adrenalin and noradrenalin:

Aldosterone increases salt/water retention, increases blood volume which increases blood pressure.

Cortisol increases blood glucose levels, increases catabolism of fat/protein, decreases inflammatory response and decreases immune response.

The overall effect of the stress response is to shunt blood away from the skin, digestive system, kidneys, liver and send it to the brain, Heart and skeletal muscles in readiness to fight or flight. So you can see that long term stress produces additional hormones which duplicate the efforts of the first hormones. This is not a good thing. One of the things that cortisol does is to catabolise (break down) fat and protein, so that these can further be broken down into additional glucose. However, as the fats and proteins are being broken down, particles break off and travel through the blood stream. These particles are known as plaques, and can attach to walls of arteries, eventually blocking them and causing artherosclerosis and coronary heart disease (CHD).

Scientists have found that short term stress is an effective method for coping with a short term crisis and provides beneficial effects:

o It enhances alertness

o It increases memory formation

o It activates the immune system.

However, long term stress has the opposite effect:

o It reduces immune system functioning and increases susceptibility to infectious diseases

o CHD can be caused by hastening formation of artherosclerotic plaques

o Stomach ulcers are more likely due to the interaction of the physiological changes of stress and the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, which are present in many peoples' stomachs

o Suppresses reproductive function

o There is a loss of memory function

o Weight loss or obesity.

Long term stress also causes many behavioural symptoms, people:

find it hard to sleep, they change their eating habits, they smoke or drink more alcohol, they avoid friends and family, they encounter sexual problems.

Physical Symptoms include:

o tiredness

o indigestion and nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances

o headaches, dizziness, earache

o aching muscles, swollen ankles, back pains

o trouble with gums, mouth and teeth

o shortness of breath

o palpitations

o poor mental health

o heart disease

Psychologically people become more indecisive, find it hard to concentrate, suffer loss of memory, have feelings of inadequacy, develop low self esteem, get irritable or angry more easily, are anxious, feel numb, are hypersensitive and feel drained or listless.

Therefore short term stress has been shown to be beneficial and is good for you, whilst long term stress has the opposite effect and is bad for you. Long term stress can, then, kill you. How can the lack of stress kill you?

Addison's disease prevents the normal release of stress hormones during encounters with stressors. Therefore, if a person is unable to sense danger, as no adrenalin or noradrenalin are released, their safety can quite easily be compromised and their existence put at risk.

Who are more susceptible to stress?

In 1985 a study was taken of civil servants at different grades to determine which group suffered more stress related illnesses. The grades were lower, middle and upper. The Whitehall II study found that the lower grades showed more prevalence of CHD due to stress than the middle or upper grades.

This has also been found to be true with other species of animals; the more subordinate the animal in a particular group, the more likely they are to be suffering from stress-related disorders.

Although cortisol is not our best friend it has beneficial effects on people with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It has been found that treating people with cortisol injections after traumatic events, such as recovery from operations, were less likely to develop PTSD than those not provided with the injection. Studies have also been undertaken on car accident victims. Benzodiazepines (sedatives) are usually given to trauma patients to help them relax and sleep. A study was undertaken in 2002. Traffic accident volunteers were given either benzodiazepine or a placebo. Those given placebos showed fewer tendencies to develop PTSD than those given the sedative. Therefore sedatives may slow trauma recovery compared to those relying on their natural stress response.

What is a stressor? Stressors are different things to different people. A car cutting you up on the motorway, somebody verbally abusing you, a fright, somebody leaves a trolley in the middle of a supermarket aisle instead of pushing it to the side (my particular stressor!)

In 1967 two psychiatrists, Holmes and Rahe, developed a list of stressors, or "Life Changing Units. The higher the LCU the more "severe" the stressor is.

Work-related stress.

So what causes stress at work?

Poor management culture:

Examples of good management culture are when:

o an organisation is committed to promoting the well-being of employees through good management practice;

o the people who work in the organisation are valued and respected; and

o they receive support from the organisation if they wish to raise problems affecting their work.

Too many demands

Examples of demands being at the right level are when:

o staff are able to cope with the volume and complexity of the work.

o the work is scheduled sensibly so that there is enough time to do the allocated tasks; shift work systems are agreed with employees or their representatives; and people are not expected to work long hours over an extended period.

Lack of control

examples of where people feel in control are when:

o they are given a say in how they do their work;

o the amount of control they have is balanced against the demands placed upon them.

Poor relationships

examples of good relationships are when:

o there is good communication between employer and employees - so that the employees understand what's expected; and the employer reacts to any problems being experienced by the employees.

o employees are not bullied or harassed.

Poor management of change

examples of good change management include

o the organisation communicating to employees the reason why change is essential

o the organisation having a clear understanding of what it wants change to achieve

o the organisation having a timetable for implementing change, which includes realistic first steps

o the organisation ensures a supportive climate for employees

Lack of training, support and failure to take account of individual factors

examples of good practice:

o employees receive suitable and sufficient training to do their jobs.

o employees receive support from their immediate line management, even when things go wrong.

o the organisation encourages people to share their concerns about health and safety and, in particular, work-related stress.

o the individual is fair to the employer - they discuss their concerns and work towards agreed solutions

Role uncertainty

examples of where people understand their role are when:

o they know why they are undertaking the work and how this fits in with the organisations wider aims and objectives.

o jobs are clearly defined to avoid confusion.

Work-related stress can also lead to:

An increase in sickness absence, which can have a domino effect - one person goes sick which leads to their workload being shared among the remaining staff.

They are unable to cope, which affects their health, and this leads to greater sickness absence.

A reduction in staff morale, poor staff performance, staff seeking alternative employment.

Organisations then have the expense of recruiting, inducting, and training new members of staff.

There are many ways we can manage stress, as shown above in the workplace. We can also try other strategies such as yoga, meditation, hypnosis and stress and management books/courses.

Conclusions

Stress is our best friend and worst enemy. Too little stress can kill as can too much. Short term stress is a very effective method in response to a short term crisis, whilst long term stress can have serious debilitating consequences. Long term stress at work can seriously affect health, staff morale and productive output.

Post-traumatic stress disorder where the sufferer is the illness to the Codependent partner-or not?

If you've been reading about the codependent woman and codependency, you likely know that the codependent woman often is attracted to and hooks up with a man with mental health issues. He might be an alcoholic or a drug addict. He might suffer from a personality disorder such as Narcissistic Personality Disorder or Antisocial Personality Disorder. Or, the man might well suffer from both addictions and a personality disorder at the same time.

Even if the man doesn't actually suffer from a full-fledged personality disorder, he is still likely to have enough mental health issues that he isn't capable of providing the woman with the type of relationship she truly desires. For example, while most women expect a partnership, he is apt to want to control her. He might be abusive in order to accomplish this goal, too. And while the narcissistic man may rely primarily upon verbal abuse or emotional abuse to accomplish his goals, the man suffering from Antisocial Personality Disorder is apt to become physically abusive-often starting off with verbal abuse and emotional abuse-and adding the physical abuse later.

Indeed, the man with a personality disorder and addiction problems is not capable of providing the woman with what she wants in a relationship. Not only is he apt to be abusive, but he is essentially incapable of love-either of giving it or receiving it. He may come on initially very strong-or he may seem quite romantic and loving. The sex might be great, too. But once this type of man believes he has the woman hooked in, things are apt to change drastically. Since he is apt to have selected her because of her tendency towards codependency which he likely spotted immediately, she is apt to stick around-confused about why he doesn't treat her as he did before. She keeps expecting the days of wine and roses to return when instead, they are likely forever over. Nonetheless, she'll believe him when he tells her that if she would only do such and such better, or so and so differently, those good days might well return!

Sure, anything might happen. But that doesn't mean it ever will. And, in the case of the relationship with the narcissistic, abusive, and addicted man, the woman may well twist herself into a pretzel to try and please him, but he will never be pleased. Of course, she doesn't realize that he needs to always be right. That means he must make her wrong. Indeed, he needs to be better than others. That means he must make her less than. So, she will always lose. But, because of her codependency, she may well remain in denial about what it truly going on-the dynamics of their relationship which he isn't about to change-since they serve him so well.

All Abusive PTSD-impacted Relationships are not the Same

But what of a relationship we're seeing more of now and will be seeing more of in the future still-the one impacted by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD? Are women who are in relationships with abusive and addicted PTSD sufferers themselves suffering from codependency? After all, many PTSD sufferers are angry and can be verbally and emotionally abusive. In fact, some will become physically violent-even kill a partner. Many PTSD sufferers abuse alcohol and drugs to try to better manage problematic PTSD symptoms-which only increase the odds that the sufferer will become abusive towards the partner.

To answer the question about codependency, you need to consider if the woman was already in a relationship with this person before he developed PTSD, or did she become involved with a long-term PTSD sufferer who exhibited these types of problems or issues right from the beginning of their relationship? Furthermore, has this PTSD sufferer done nothing to try and deal with the problematic PTSD symptoms? In the first case, the woman might have sent her partner off to the war zone seeing her beloved as one type of a man. If he developed PTSD as a result of that experience, he may well have returned seemingly a stranger. The symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can do that to a person-and hence, change the nature of their relationship overnight into something that is the antithesis of warm and loving. As alluded to earlier, it could become deadly, in fact.

The woman involved with someone who developed PTSD more recently and is showing problematic behaviors because of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder needs to be concerned about her physical and emotional well-being-as well as that of any children present-because the PTSD sufferer can be a danger to others as well as himself. He truly could have suicidal and homicidal thoughts-thoughts he never would have had before developing PTSD. So, the woman in a relationship with such a man should always have a safety plan and be prepared to leave. At the same time, though, if he is getting help for those PTSD symptoms, she should hold out hope that things could get better. She likely will want to hang in there and be supportive because indeed, her support will likely help him to improve and become something more akin to the man he was before. While he may never become that same person because, for example, war changes people, that doesn't mean that they couldn't go forth to have a good relationship and happy family once again.

The woman who is hoping that her willingness to keep on giving to the man who has suffered from PTSD for years now, but without seeking treatment, is facing a different situation. She needs to realize that long-term PTSD sufferers have been helped. So, instead of just giving and giving in the way a codependent woman is inclined to do, she may want to stop and ask her partner if he has considered getting some psychotherapy to help him better manage his PTSD symptoms. Also, does he realize there are medications that could help to tame those symptoms, too? If he indicates that he has tried those things and they didn't work, then she might need to stop and ask herself if there are things wrong with this picture that she can't change. Or, if he says that no one can help him, only wimps seek help, or he certainly doesn't have any mental health issues but she is becoming the victim of them quite regularly, then she probably should wipe her denial away and stare into the face of reality instead.

It may be sad that anyone has to develop and suffer from PTSD. But because the PTSD sufferer has allowed his life to be ruined by those PTSD symptoms, should the woman stick around and have her life ruined, too? She may make a conscious choice to do so-for example, she believes that this is her purpose or mission and, no matter what sacrifices she must make, she is certainly going to do this. But if she just finds herself doing this because she is used to being stepped on by others or being used and abused because this happened to her in childhood, then she may want to consider the fact that she is behaving as a codependent. Furthermore, she may want to work towards becoming codependent no more.

By the way, we're not trying to blame or condemn the victim of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The PTSD sufferer likely experienced one or more traumatic events outside his control. His brain then reacted in ways the individual couldn't control-at least not initially. But since the brain is more malleable than mental health experts once believed, with the proper therapy, it may be possible to rewire the brain in such a way that the PTSD symptoms could entirely disappear-or at least, they could become more manageable. Furthermore, psychotherapists know techniques to teach PTSD sufferers so they can better manage any remaining symptoms.

If you are concerned about a woman who is inclined to sit back and take a partner's abuse, assume responsibilities for his problems created by PTSD symptoms, or to engage in other behaviors that she considers loving and caring while they're causing you and others to raise your eyebrows, you may want to gently suggest that you suspect she could be suffering from codependency. Furthermore, she might well so her partner and herself a favor if she pushed for recovery-his from those debilitating PTSD symptoms and hers from codependency.

Diane England, Ph.D. is the author of a self-help book designated by the "Library Journal" as one of the "BEST BOOKS OF 2009." In fact, "The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Relationship: How to Support Your Partner and Keep Your Relationship Healthy" was one of only three self-help books to make their list. While this licensed clinical social worker, with other degrees in family studies and child development as well, offers information and tools for those struggling with relationships harmed by PTSD, previously Diane England wrote articles on topics such as his narcissism, addictions, and abuse and her likely codependency and recovery via personal development and spiritual growth. Diane England sincerely hopes you will check out her book even if it would not benefit you personally-so you might make others aware of it. After all, you never know who may be suffering silently and needlessly. Also, with PTSD associated with a higher risk of suicide, you could be offering a PTSD-impacted couple a life preserver without even knowing it, don't you imagine?

Clinton stressed democracy in Egypt, Tunisia trip

WASHINGTON (Reuters)--US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to travel to Egypt and Tunisia next week, the highest American became official to visit the region after a popular revolt toppled the Government of the UNITED STATES in both countries.

"I intend to trigger a strong support for the Obama administration and the American people that we want to be an important partner in the work that awaits us, how to transition to true democracy," Clinton told a Congress panel on Thursday.

"We have a huge interest in ensuring that Egypt and Tunisia provide models for the kind of democracy that we want to see," said Clinton, says he was planning to talk directly with people, the Tunisian and Egyptian during the visit.

Clinton will be in Paris in March 14-15 for meetings of the Group of eight Foreign Ministers, and then fly to Egypt and Tunisia on March 15-17, the Foreign Ministry said.

Clinton during the tour will enable her to assess the situation in Egypt, where the United States provided strong support for the demonstrators, who eventually forced the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, a longtime ally of the US, in February.

It will also be talking to the Transitional Government officials in Tunisia, which launched a wave of political turmoil, sweeping the Arab world in January, the mass protests that toppled President Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali.

Egypt and Tunisia both borders of Libya, which qadhdhafi still bloody battle against rebels trying to end his rule 41 years triggered growing calls for international action.

Clinton said the Committee for the redistribution of the House of representatives, the Obama administration has been the United Nations on possible stronger measures on Libya and seek to build bridges to the Libyan opposition.

"THE BOMBS AND BULLETS"

"We are in the Libyan people as a brave, bombs and bullets are demanding that Gaddafi must go," said Clinton.

"We reached out to the opposition inside and outside Libya. I got to meet with some of this information here in the United States, and when I get to travel next week to discuss what it can do more, the United States and the other. "

The United States joined efforts to help thousands of people fleeing the unrest in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, but still has not accepted the proposals of the military response, including the creation of a no-fly zone on Earth.

In a grim assessment of the rebels a chance, head of the intelligence services of the UNITED STATES James Clapper told the Senate Committee that Libyan forces loyal to Gaddafi were better equipped, more logistical resources and "over the longer term, the system will prevail."

Clinton's visit takes place as the United States is trying to understand how it affects the political transformation of the Middle East, US interests and the interests of its key regional ally, Israel.

Washington supported, what it calls for an orderly transition in Egypt, where the army is the supervision of the interim Government, with plans for a constitutional referendum and elections for Parliament and President.

The United States has already announced 150 million dollars in aid for Egypt, including $ 60 million for the preparation of the elections.

"We'll have to see some greater things than this," said Clinton. "No to Europe, aren't looking into the Gulf, even if they are happy that their assistance. They look at us. "

Clinton also will meet the administrator of the authorities of Tunisia, who are negotiating, through political changes before the elections for a new Constituent National Assembly in July.

Clinton said that the United States had to continue to engage with the Middle East, such as new order appears.

"Yes, it's exciting."And it entails very significant challenges to America's position, for our security and for our long-term interests, "she said.

Oregon officials: 1 in 5 veterans suffering from PTSD

Oregon Army National Guard Master Sgt. Jeff McDowell of Eugene thought he was fine in 2005, after he returned from a year of combat in Iraq, but his wife knew better.

McDowell, then 41, couldn't sleep, was quick to anger and often found himself feeling anxious, especially when out in public, worried that other people were a threat to his wife and their two children.

His wife, Shelly, said, "?'You need to go and talk to somebody,'?" McDowell recalls.

He saw a mental health counselor at the Eugene Vet Center. Other visits followed and, the next year, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs diagnosed McDowell with post-traumatic stress disorder, an anxiety disorder that can affect people who have been through traumatic events, including combat.

McDowell, who now lives outside Veneta with his family, said the counseling helps him manage his anxieties, but he knows other veterans who aren't doing so well.

"They are holed up in their homes," he said.

Precise numbers of former soldiers who have PTSD aren't available, but of the veterans who served in Afghanistan or Iraq, an estimated 20 percent — one in five — have the disorder, said Tom Mann, public information manager of the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs.

The federal VA estimates the number is higher — 25 percent.

And, with 3,000 to 6,000 Oregonians who serve in all branches of the military, including those who saw combat, returning to civilian life, the number of people afflicted by PTSD is expected to grow.

PTSD symptoms, including insomnia, feelings of rage, suicidal thoughts and reclusiveness, can make it difficult for veterans to readjust to civilian life, leading to divorce, unemployment, family estrangement, alcoholism and drug abuse, Mann said.

Sometimes, the disorder can lead to incidents with tragic results.

In December, Michael Mason, an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran from Springfield who had been diagnosed with PTSD, was shot and paralyzed by Eugene police after he had inexplicably fired shots with a 9 mm handgun in the Valley River Center parking lot. No one was injured by Mason's shots.

The VA classifies PTSD as an anxiety disorder that can occur when a person experiences a traumatic, life-threatening event. Strong emotions, such as fear, anger and confusion, caused by the event create changes in the brain that may result in PTSD, the VA says.

PTSD has been around a long time, mental health professionals say, although it was called different names following earlier wars, including "soldier's heart" after the Civil War, "combat fatigue" for WWI veterans and "post-Vietnam syndrome" for Vietnam veterans.

But anyone who undergoes life-threatening or terrifying experiences, such as a car accident or rape, can develop symptoms, according to the VA.

People with PTSD can continue to relive the traumatic event in their minds, through flashbacks and nightmares.

Certain sights or sounds, such as fireworks or a car backfiring, can bring back memories of gunfire for combat veterans.

"During flashbacks, people aren't thinking real well," said David Baldwin, a Eugene psychologist who specializes in stress and trauma counseling. "They are responding to danger, or a life threat, or fighting for their lives, and feel as if they're back in their traumatizing experience."

People with PTSD can have "heightened levels of physiological arousal," such as elevated heart rates even though they are not in real danger, Baldwin said.

"Because they feel unsafe, they're more likely to be triggered into a defense state that might get them out of a traumatic experience that isn't really happening," he said.

"During this type of event, you think that your life or others' lives are in danger," Baldwin said. "You may feel afraid or feel that you have no control over what is happening."

McDowell, a member of the of the Oregon Army National Guard 2nd Battalion/162nd Infantry Regiment, arrived in Iraq in 2004, about a year after the U.S. entered the country. Fighting was heavy as the insurgency and sectarian violence grew.

McDowell belonged to a battalion scout unit, which operated in downtown Baghdad.

"We were the eyes and ears of the battalion commander," he said. "We did intelligence gathering. We went on raids. We worked very closely with the explosive ordnance teams. We did explosive ordnance removals. If a soldier or Iraqi policeman was injured by an improvised explosive device, we did the investigation."

"Sixty-five to 70 percent of the time, you are moving along and not much is happening, but 25 percent to 30 percent of the time, all hell is breaking loose. And there were a handful of significant events that I don't know how we survived."

After returning to Eugene, McDowell remained in the National Guard and resumed work as a contractor. He said he often felt keyed up, or "hypervigilant" when he was in public with his family.

At restaurants, for example, he would constantly look at other people and listen to what they said.

"You are constantly assessing people," McDowell said. "You are constantly looking for threats.

"It was getting obsessive."

But after he underwent counseling , McDowell said, his symptoms improved.

After 22 years in the National Guard, McDowell retired from the service in 2007.

He's now attending Northwest Christian University, working on a master's degree in community counseling.

His goal: to become a VA counselor to help Vets with PTSD and other problems.

"Maybe I have something to offer other veterans," he said.

In the last year, 3,414 veterans affected by PTSD made a total of 21,564 visits to VA clinics overseen by the VA's Roseburg office, which administers health care for veterans in Lane, Douglas, Coos and Curry counties and northern California's Del Norte County.

The relatively high rate of PTSD among returning veterans can be attributed to the military's reliance on repeated combat deployments, officials say, which increases the chances of soldiers being exposed to traumatic events, as well as the possibility of suffering brain injuries, both of which contribute to PTSD.

About 80 percent of the patients seen in the Veterans Affairs mental health clinics in Eugene have been diagnosed with PTSD, said Dr. Les Garwood, the VA's lead psychiatrist in Eugene.

Last year, the VA relaxed its standards to make it easier for veterans to get help for PTSD.

Previously, veterans had to identify a particular traumatic event that could have caused the disorder and the VA would have to verify that event through military records. Now, benefits for combat-related PTSD can be given without the VA having to document a specific event, only that combat experiences contributed to the disorder.

The VA benefit adjudicators "will rely on a VA mental health provider's diagnosis that the person has PTSD and it's related to their combat experiences," said Joseph Reiley, supervisor of the Lane County Veterans Services Office.

"So folks who have concerns about having this condition, I would encourage them to contact this office and we will assist them with their claim for benefits."

Garwood, the VA psychiatrist, said PTSD can be treated with medication and individual and group therapy, but it's rare for the disorder to completely disappear.

"PTSD tends to be a maintenance disorder; it improves over time with treatment in most instances," he said. "But I don't like to misrepresent the concept of PTSD, that you cure it like a sore throat or cancer. It's more like treatment of diabetes or arthritis. They are chronic conditions, and the goal is reducing (PTSD) symptoms to the point where the quality of life is improved and the ability to function is optimized."

The trauma of war — killing other people and seeing friends die — can challenge veterans' beliefs about themselves and the meaning of life, Garwood said.

"PTSD is a chronic condition," he said. "It's not something (veterans) can snap out of or get over right away. Veterans deserve empathy, compassion and grace from the public."

Nearly one in five veterans who served in Afghanistan or Iraq are believed to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and with thousands of Oregonians coming back from war, military officials expect growing numbers.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder that can affect people who have experienced traumatic events, including combat. Symptoms include insomnia, rage and suicidal thoughts.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports that the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs says about 20 percent of veterans suffer from it.

Officials say the relatively high rate of PTSD among returning veterans can be attributed to the military's reliance on repeated combat deployments. Last year, the VA relaxed its standards to make it easier for veterans to get help for the disorder.

Katrina Survisors and PTSD-the pain is still

Only 18 months ago, the Americans were glued to their television sets, watching the horror, devastation of our neighbors, such as the United States in the Gulf area are played. Citizens and institutions from around the world demonstrate care and concern. People throughout the country to open their homes, schools, shelters and an unprecedented natural disaster resources for credit card fraud.

Arizona reiterated the Governor as "this is not a Sprint, but the Marathon!" Our new neighbors still necessary in the form of food, clothing and continuous support, new hope for the future. As the most horrific events that people experience (natural or not), the survivors need time for this event to the trauma.

One of the image in the image in my mind the inset on the television. Still visible on the mobile downtown airport at a speed of water through the courageous puhdistettaessa New Orleans street. They approached the House, which is below the level of the water, the front door stairway. Man greets Bernard and Bianca deny them help and proceeds to dust off his broom and sweep of the event to the steps of the way.

This image, on the streets of New Orleans, Posttraumatic stress disorder is characterised by an abundance of nature. This poor man had two out of his life, as nothing had happened. Psychological numbing and denial of service vulnerability exists in the victim's accounts had been stable, and he was not about to leave the only possession he was ... in his home.

Even though, as the case may be, the amount of the aid money and do not make this go away grieving for the victims of the Gulf disaster in pain. Only once, and emotional support through the painful reality of this trauma is reduced. Many in France from this tragedy is the psychological support, as the case may be, shall be able to move forward in their lives. This country is prepared to improve our support is needed?

In the coming years we expect Memorial emotional fallout, without prejudice to any of our people face the natural disasters. Those who are to assist one of PTSD must be understood in the light of the characteristics of the yleistilaan. The following is an overview of the problems:

o initial psychological numbing and denial of service vulnerability.

o Experience, which means the threat of serious harm or injury.

o experience of intense fear and terror, the vulnerability.

o signs of Persistent reexperiencing the transaction.

o avoidance of Stimuli associated with the transaction.

o Permanent symptoms, hypervigilence, startle response, and arousal.

o Increased agitation, anxiety, depression and anger.

o Emotional withdrawal and social detachment of, a bow door.

o's reliance on the pattern of consumption of alcohol and other substances present in the self medicating.

We know that some of the Gulf were suffering from psychological disorders Association to Hurricane Katrina. These people need urgent psychological intervention to ensure that it is necessary to support the lifestyle of their disorders and counseling. Others who have been in financial planning for this event, the emotional trauma to psychological support is also needed. In the different Member States and the need to coordinate the Housing Association of mental health, through the efforts of the agencies in support of the churches. Volunteers have been recruited and trained so that they can assist those who are confronted with Posttraumatic stress disorder, pain. If we address our sadness and despair due to the neighbors of mental health needs, is not working for many who were touched by Hurricane Katrina. Now, when the characters in the event the original shock has come and gone, it is time for all of us to commit ourselves to the re-makes, which is to help our neighbors in need.

People are easy going and to continue his life turns to the usual pace of other disasters-Katrina all olive, including 9/11. More than a million people and displaced more than 400,000 have lost his job. We have parents and children remain separated from each other. Small children are asked, "what is your mother's name, and they respond with" mommy. " At the end of May 2006, was still the youngest 1,753, 18-year-old children in the three-week-old infant, who were still separated from their family members.

Health care providers to assume many roles in the middle of a natural disaster-management, the Director, the Comforter and the data source. Such as health care providers the necessary instructions, we should take into account the decrease in our care are part of the losses. Interviewing any person crossing the sensitivity is essential and is the first step in assessing the specific needs. CAPS-test (clinician-administered PTSD scale) may be administered at some point the stress level and gauge what PTSD is the victim's emotional state.

The investigation has shown that the longer and heavier the person's life, the greater the probability of the threat to the development of PTSD. Yleistilaan is one of the more people who are socially isolated, psychological and physical trauma history and with the people in the past, including depression and mental health problems. The children ran out of the disaster, which was at an early stage fare better than those who watched over the dead bodies floating on the water, and which saw the loss of a parent or have seen violence.

Providers may contribute to mental health, environmental safety, the environment, reduce the complexity of connections, you will be charmed by the other, the self-empowerment and hopefulness. Workers should:

o help to people who meet their basic needs.

o to provide a simple and accurate information about how to obtain the services.

o you will be able to listen to people who want to share your stories.

o is friendly and compassionate, even with difficult people.

o help people, please contact us with your friends and loved ones ....

o the authorities together.

o provide practical proposals that will help to guide people towards itself.

Avoid using, for example:

o Forces users to share their stories.

Telling people what you think, o they should be feeling, thinking and doing.

o Making any representations regarding the use, which shall not be considered.

o existing services or Criticizing the relief effort.

PTSD is not a prerequisite, which is the only "heads."
